Key Profile:

A Fisheries Scientist, Visiting Professor, and National and International Consultant, Dr. Binay Kumar Chakraborty has been a key researcher and extension worker in Bangladesh & aquaculture and fisheries management, specifically in the coastal aquaculture of mud crab and mud eel, shrimp, and sea bass, coastal fisheries livelihood, climate resilient sustainable management, wetland resource conservation, and wetland biodiversity. In addition to being a supervisor and co-supervisor at Bangladesh Agricultural University, he has experience working as an external examiner and thesis examiner for abroad PhD students. He & been a mentor to many kids. In Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India, he has been visiting professor and faculty member, faculty of Science at Swami Vivekanand Subharti University.

He has developed technologies on a. crab cage culture, b. crab fattening pen culture, and c. mud crab juvenile culture in his research project, “Culture of Cuchia and Crab in the Selected Area of Bangladesh and Research Project.” d. Development of fishermen’s livelihoods; e. Establishment of a crab hatchery in Cox’s Bazar and experience in hatchery management; f. Survey on stock assessment of mud crab in Bangladesh. Eel’s (Monopterus cuchia) nursery and culture management, as well as regulating natural breeding, have been discovered by him.

In the CREL project, he directly worked on climate-resilient sustainable management and conservation of wetland resources and biodiversity, aiming to increase ecosystem and livelihood resiliency to climate change impacts through improved resource planning, rural livelihood strategies, economic growth, and multi-sector partnerships targeting marginalized groups. The project provided financial literacy and enterprise training through local organizations, enhancing beneficiary access to AIG and microfinance, and fostering viable livelihoods and enterprises, particularly for marginalized populations.

He first successfully established the Fisheries Diploma Institution in Chandpur, Bangladesh, a mid-level fisheries manpower institution, and as part of the Fisheries Diploma Course Implementation Project, he introduced course curricula in collaboration with the Bangladesh Technical Education Board. Approximately the eighth semester of the four-year study includes both theoretical and practical components. He creates the course syllabus for the Fisheries Diploma program. He was the chairman of the Technical Education Board’s question moderation committee in Bangladesh and has expertise as an examiner.

The individual possesses expertise in project coordination, administration, monitoring, mangrove habitat mapping, fisheries management strategies, standard operating procedures, mariculture technology connections, and promoting marine fisheries systems. He has experience with crabs, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, and Penaeus monodon (tighter prawn) culture, as well as other coastal and marine fisheries management. He is also skilled in the breeding, nursery, and culture of major and minor carp and catfish. He is an expert in floodplain management, aquatic biodiversity, feed, food security, and livelihoods. He invented the mechanism for inducing spawning in the spiny Tara baim (Macrognathus aral) and Guchi (Macrognathus pancakes) in Bangladesh. He possesses extensive expertise in participatory action research, including agricultural extension, as well as project design, development, and execution. Along with his expertise in the extension, motivation, and rehabilitation of fishermen in coastal areas and other disaster-prone locations, he also possesses strong management, communication, analytical, and reporting abilities. Additionally, he is capable of communicating and raising awareness about GO, NGO, and other members of society.

He has served as a reviewer for over 24 international publications and is a member of the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Advanced Academic Study, the Asian Biological Research Foundation (ABRF), and the International Journal of Oceanography and Aquaculture. Additionally, he has life memberships in nineteen national and international organizations and societies. National and international publishers and organizations publish around a hundred abstracts, 89 scientific papers, 38 other pieces, nine book chapters, and fifteen research and academic books. He serves in Bangladesh Agricultural University and overseas as a supervisor, co-supervisor, and external and examiner of PhD theses.
