Expert Consultation Workshop on Enhancing Earthquake Resilience in Bangkok: Review, Updates and Risk Assessment
The International Emergency Management Society (TIEMS) in collaboration with The Association of Siamese Architects Under Royal Patronage (ASA) and its partners co-organized the Expert Consultation Workshop on Enhancing Earthquake Resilience in Bangkok: Review, Updates and Risk Assessment (In English) on Tuesday 29th April 2025 at the Jupiter Room 4 – 6, Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok, Thailand from 09:00 – 12:15 hrs. The workshop provided a forum for experts to review, to update and to address the current status of earthquake risks and hazards, to assess national and local capacities in end-to-end early warning and mitigation systems, to identify measures for adaptation and mitigation efforts, to share information and best practices in order to improve disaster prevention and mitigation arrangements for Bangkok. Some commitments to future collaboration were made by the experts at this workshop. These are: This workshop has brought together the appropriate experts and government agencies to create a report for the policy makers to act upon and to bring them on board; TIEMS by the President, Mr. K. Harald Drager mentioned about the existing gaps on communication, preparedness and response that would need to be improved for the future earthquakes; Associate Prof. Dr. Teraphan Ornthammarath, Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University committed to continue to his research on improving seismic design which will benefit the scientific communities; USGS by Dr. Walter Mooney committed to work with Thailand and relevant agencies on capacity building for earthquake forecasting; The NDWC-DDPM has an important role to coordinate with relevant departments to implement earthquake early warning and mitigation system, preparedness and response plans at all levels. The NDWC-DDPM, relevant interagency governmental departments and academic institutions will collaborate with TIEMS to establish the Thailand Chapter. TIEMS has an international network of more than 80,000 experts worldwide, and such a network can be very valuable for finding expertise and for the exchange of experience and knowledge. The goal is to arrange a TIEMS-NDWC workshop in the country focusing on the regional hazards and disaster response capabilities and introduce and establish the Thailand Chapter and then join TIEMS worldwide activities and network. This way the Thailand chapter will be part of an international network of experts and all experience and knowledge will there be available for assistance to Thailand in addressing the hazards of Bangkok and remedies to reduce the consequences of any disasters that might strike. NDWC committed to improve its communication system through cell broadcast warning system for effectively inform decision-makers and the public at the last mile; Miyamoto International would collaborate with private sector on both performance base and investment base designs. Dr. Kit Miyamoto will be in Thailand next week to meet with the private industry to discuss on the issues of earthquake prevention which will be useful for them; The Pacific Disaster Center (PDC Global) is open to collaboration opportunities with partner agencies for making information meaningful and to promote the decision-support capability improvement for Thailand and other countries.
