CIRDAP’s webinar under the CIRDAP Knowledge Series 2026 titled ‘Agri Extension: Impactful Innovations in South Asia & Cross Learning Possibilities’ will be held on (Thursday), April 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Bangladesh time.
Challenges of Agriculture Sector in South Asian Region:
- About 80 per cent of South Asia’s poor live in rural areas, most of whom depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Larger part of cropped area of this region is rainfed/dryland.
- Sector is dominated by small farmers often with weak bargaining power and limited political voice.
- Women constitute most of the agricultural labour in small-scale and subsistence farming in the region.
- Farmers especially women faced by several new challenges – deteriorating natural resources base, shrinking farm base, climate change, and increasing deregulation of trade.
- Funding constraints and weak organizational design and implementation.
- Inadequate capacities of the present models to respond to the emerging field concerns (be it on production, post production and across the value chains and right up to the consumer levels)…hence the urgent need for innovations and reforms in Extension
