Message from Dr. Cherdsak Virapat, Director General, Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) on The International Women’s Day Wednesday, 8 March 2023

Excellency, Ladies & Gentlemen, Today, we celebrate the International Women’s Day at the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP). The United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as an Official UN International Day for Women’s right and world peace. This international women’s day commemorates the cultural, political, and socio-economic achievements of women. It also addresses women’s right’s movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive right, and violence and abuse against women. The theme for the International Women’s Day on 8 March 2023 (IWD 2023) is, “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality” & Campaign theme is “Embrace Equity“,   recognizing the contribution of women and girls around the world in Digital world and ICT development who are  playing a very important role to build a more sustainable future for all through digitalization. According to UN Women, “a persistent gender gap in digital access keeps women from unlocking technologies full potential. Their underrepresentation in STEM education and careers remains a major barrier to their participation in tech design and governance. And the pervasive threat of online gender-based violence—coupled with a lack of legal recourse—too often forces them out of the digital spaces they do occupy.” The Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) is supporting women’s and girls’ works and rights in every aspect in the society. CIRDAP works towards gender equality, women’s education, and decent jobs, which helps women’s to be empowered. CIRDAP has developed a Programme Brochure on “Women, Youth and Rural Development Programme” and under this programme CIRDAP, will organize various activities on Women & Youth. CIRDAP has already organized various webinars on Gender issues in celebration of the International Women’s Day & International Day of Rural Women. In 2022, CIRDAP staff took part in the 8th Global Symposium on Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries which was held from 21-23 November, 2022, Kochi, India. It is an opportunity to acknowledge the progress being made by Women. On behalf of CIRDAP, I would like to call for immediate global attention to ensure women’s full and effective participation on Digital technology and world and equal opportunities at all levels of political, economic and public life. CIRDAP is proud to organize a Webinar for celebrating the International Women Day on 9 March 2023 on the topics: “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality: Perspective of Bangladesh” & “Violence against the women in Nepal- current situation, challenges and efforts to minimize it” Thank you for your kind attention.

A Webinar on Identifying the Gender-Nutrition intersections in India

A webinar titled “Identifying the Gender-Nutrition intersections in India: Quantitative and Qualitative Evidence” was held under the CIRDAP webinar series of 2023. The presenter was Dr. Ruchira Bhattacharya, Assistant Professor & Head in-Charge, NIRD-PR Delhi Branch. The abstract of the presentation:Achieving zero hunger has been a key challenge for low-and middle income countries. India too has suffered from high rates of hunger and malnutrition with extremely high rates of wasting and stunting in children under 5, high rates of anemia in women and an increasing proportion of persons reporting obesity. The problem of malnutrition has also manifested itself as a gendered challenge. Due to multiple structural barriers that women face due to the cultural and societal practices liked to feminine roles, balanced nutrition becomes more difficult to access. These gender-nutrition intersections were examined in the presentation with secondary literature, and secondary data to observe the trends in nutritional intake for different genders, as well as the underlying causes of gendered-barriers to nutrition. The presentation also touched upon a few primary studies done by NIRD-PR which observed the complex gender-nutrition pathways for dietary diversity and service delivery on nutrition. To know more about the presentation, Please click the below link: GENDER & NUTRITION INTERSECTIONS IN INDIA: QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE EVIDENCE

THE INTERNATIONAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SOCIETY

To Whomsoever it May Concern The Earthquake in Turkey and North -West Syria In my capacity as the President of The International Emergency Management Society – TIEMS, I want to convey my heartfelt condolences to the family members of the people who have lost their lives due to the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey and north-west Syria. Large numbers of trained Urban Search and Rescue personnel have flown in from several countries and international emergency response is being coordinated by UNDAC, UNOCHA and INSARAG teams in the affected areas. As the search and rescue process is continuing, the numbers of earthquake victims are rising and have reportedly crossed more than 20,000 lives lost due to the earthquake. TIEMS strongly believe that strict enforcement and compliance with earthquake resilient building codes will help in the earthquake-prone countries of the world. We also believe that creating greater public awareness on strengthening earthquake preparedness through education, training, mock drills and certification of people in emergency management will strengthen the capacity of people to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters. TIEMS conducts international certification in emergency management and awards TQC and TQAC diplomas to those who qualify in the examinations conducted by TIEMS with four courses, INSARAG being one of the courses concerning Search and Rescue which the examinees have to qualify in. The International Emergency Management Society – TIEMS was established in 1993 in Washington D.C., USA and is now registered in Brussels, Belgium as an international not for profit NGO. TIEMS has a Global Board of Directors and country chapters in several countries around the world. TIEMS has been organising Annual Conferences hosted by its national chapters every year since its inauguration and the most recent one was held at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States in 2022 hosted by the TIEMS US Chapter. TIEMS has emergency management practitioners and disaster management experts as members and its outreach is to over 15000 domain experts and professionals across the world. TIEMS members include first responders, risk governance experts, policy analysts and emergency management professionals and practitioners. We find that the earthquake victims in north west Syria who have been crippled by more than 12 years of conflict are devastated by this earthquake and that aid and relief supplies are not reaching these people adequately compared to the flow of aid and relief to the earthquake victims in Turkey. TIEMS appeals to Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General and the United Nations Security Council to open a humanitarian corridor for aid and relief flows to north western Syria to help the earthquake victims in the freezing winter. TIEMS also urges the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) to advocate for strict enforcement and compliance of building codes in earthquake prone countries. TIEMS offers its willingness to be of assistance to the United Nations to strengthen the emergency preparedness and response capacities in the earthquake affected regions.    Oslo, 10th February 2023 TIEMS President K.
