Message by Dr. Cherdsak Virapat, Director General of CIRDAP on The International Day of Forests 2023

Dear respected IRD Expert of CIRDAP, distinguished participants and CIRDAP Colleagues, I am pleased to welcome our keynote speaker, Dr. Mohammad Israr, the CIRDAP IRD Expert and each of participants to the webinar entitled “International Day of Forests”.   Today, we celebrate the International Day of Forests at the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP). The day of 21 March was established at the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests. The UN member countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities each year involving forests and trees. The theme for 2023 is “Forests and health.” On behalf of CIRDAP, I call for global attention on forest conservation and sustainable management of the forest resources and their ecosystems because the healthy forests will bring about the healthy people. The International Day of Forests is a reminder of the valuable role forests play for people and the planet. Forests provide an important source of income for the rural poor, offer solutions to the challenges of mitigating and adapting to climate change and meet the demands of a rapidly-growing global population. Forest goods provide an important hidden harvest for rural populations, keeping many people out of extreme poverty. About 350 million people who live within or close to dense forests depend on them for their subsistence and income. Forests are an important aspect of rural livelihoods, with households living near forested areas deriving as much as 22 percent of their income from forest sources. This contribution is greater than that of wage labor, livestock, self-owned businesses or any other category aside from crops. Forests support rural economies in many countries and create jobs and wealth for populations with few alternatives off-farm employment options. Forests provide a critical carbon sink to slow climate change; however, deforestation and forest degradation contribute about 12% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.   Forests provide us with direct or indirect multiple socio-economic benefits and environmental services and in particular on our human health. They purify the water, clean the air, capture carbon to fight climate change, provide food and life-saving medicines, and improve our well-being. Conserving and sustainably using forests is one of the best ways of protecting our planet and ourselves. Healthy forests are vital for all aspects of a healthy planet, from livelihoods and nutrition to biodiversity and the environment, but they are under threat. It’s up to us to safeguard these precious natural resources. Thank you.

Message from Dr. Cherdsak Virapat, Director General, Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) on The International Women’s Day Wednesday, 8 March 2023

Excellency, Ladies & Gentlemen, Today, we celebrate the International Women’s Day at the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP). The United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as an Official UN International Day for Women’s right and world peace. This international women’s day commemorates the cultural, political, and socio-economic achievements of women. It also addresses women’s right’s movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive right, and violence and abuse against women. The theme for the International Women’s Day on 8 March 2023 (IWD 2023) is, “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality” & Campaign theme is “Embrace Equity“,   recognizing the contribution of women and girls around the world in Digital world and ICT development who are  playing a very important role to build a more sustainable future for all through digitalization. According to UN Women, “a persistent gender gap in digital access keeps women from unlocking technologies full potential. Their underrepresentation in STEM education and careers remains a major barrier to their participation in tech design and governance. And the pervasive threat of online gender-based violence—coupled with a lack of legal recourse—too often forces them out of the digital spaces they do occupy.” The Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) is supporting women’s and girls’ works and rights in every aspect in the society. CIRDAP works towards gender equality, women’s education, and decent jobs, which helps women’s to be empowered. CIRDAP has developed a Programme Brochure on “Women, Youth and Rural Development Programme” and under this programme CIRDAP, will organize various activities on Women & Youth. CIRDAP has already organized various webinars on Gender issues in celebration of the International Women’s Day & International Day of Rural Women. In 2022, CIRDAP staff took part in the 8th Global Symposium on Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries which was held from 21-23 November, 2022, Kochi, India. It is an opportunity to acknowledge the progress being made by Women. On behalf of CIRDAP, I would like to call for immediate global attention to ensure women’s full and effective participation on Digital technology and world and equal opportunities at all levels of political, economic and public life. CIRDAP is proud to organize a Webinar for celebrating the International Women Day on 9 March 2023 on the topics: “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality: Perspective of Bangladesh” & “Violence against the women in Nepal- current situation, challenges and efforts to minimize it” Thank you for your kind attention.

A Webinar on Identifying the Gender-Nutrition intersections in India

A webinar titled “Identifying the Gender-Nutrition intersections in India: Quantitative and Qualitative Evidence” was held under the CIRDAP webinar series of 2023. The presenter was Dr. Ruchira Bhattacharya, Assistant Professor & Head in-Charge, NIRD-PR Delhi Branch. The abstract of the presentation:Achieving zero hunger has been a key challenge for low-and middle income countries. India too has suffered from high rates of hunger and malnutrition with extremely high rates of wasting and stunting in children under 5, high rates of anemia in women and an increasing proportion of persons reporting obesity. The problem of malnutrition has also manifested itself as a gendered challenge. Due to multiple structural barriers that women face due to the cultural and societal practices liked to feminine roles, balanced nutrition becomes more difficult to access. These gender-nutrition intersections were examined in the presentation with secondary literature, and secondary data to observe the trends in nutritional intake for different genders, as well as the underlying causes of gendered-barriers to nutrition. The presentation also touched upon a few primary studies done by NIRD-PR which observed the complex gender-nutrition pathways for dietary diversity and service delivery on nutrition. To know more about the presentation, Please click the below link: GENDER & NUTRITION INTERSECTIONS IN INDIA: QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE EVIDENCE
