Webinar held for the occasion of the International Women’s Day 2024

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, CIRDAP organized a webinar titled “ENHANCING WOMEN’s POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN INDIA THROUGH MAHILA SABHAs (Women’s Forums)”. Dr. N.V. Madhuri, Head, Centre for Gender Studies and Development (CGSD), National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad was graced the occasion as speaker. NIRDPR with the support of UNICEF initiated the project to identify the priorities of Women & Children through the Mahila Sabhas and Bal Sabhas’ and integrate their priorities into Local government level planning. For sustainable economic and social development of any country, it is necessary that people participate in the political process. The 73rd constitutional Amendment Act (1992) in India created space for women in political participation and decision-making at the grass root level by providing that 1/3rd of the seats would be reserved for women in Local Governments all over the country. This paved the way for more women to get elected for leadership positions in the local governments. Effective performance by the women elected representatives delivers positive results, benefiting both the providers (representatives) and the beneficiaries (the community). In order to give voice to women and children at the level of grassroots’ democracy, the Ministry of Local Governance has urged provincial governments to convene separate Mahila Sabhas( Women’s Forums) to ensure enhanced Village Panchayats focus in the welfare of women and children. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, and the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) jointly organized a breakfast meeting on the “Declaration of the World Rural Development Day” at the CIRDAP secretariat on 22nd February 2024. Ambassador Mr. Masud Bin Momen, Foreign Secretary (Senior Secretary), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh, presided over the meeting. The Heads of Missions of the High Commissions/Embassies of the Member States of CIRDAP in Dhaka gracefully attended the meeting to discuss the draft resolution titled “Declaration of the World Rural Development Day” to be tabled at the UN General Assembly. Dr. Cherdsak Virapat, the Director General (DG) of CIRDAP, welcomed the distinguished ambassadors, high commissioners, and their representatives and expressed his gratitude toward them. He briefly discussed the importance of a day like World Rural Development Day. In his opening remark, Ambassador Mr. Masud Bin Momen expressed that the proposed UN General Assembly Resolution on the declaration of ‘World Rural Development Day’ can be part of a coordinated strategy to demonstrate the shared commitment to leaving no one behind in our rural areas. He also said that this could be a collective appreciation to CIRDAP by internationally earmarking the date it was established, i.e., 06 July, as the ‘World Rural Development Day.’ Ambassador Mr. Masud Bin Momen requested ambassadors and high commissioners in Dhaka to sensitize the respective Capitals and Permanent Missions in New York about the draft Resolution. He said it would be ideal if all CIRDAP Member States could co-sponsor the draft Resolution and table it as a collective undertaking. Webinar on Times of Crisis, Times of Change: Science for Accelerating Transformations to Sustainable Development-held on 18th December ’23

“Times of Crisis, Times of Change: Science for Accelerating Transformations to Sustainable Development” The Global Sustainable Development Report 2023 Dr. Nancy Shackell, Senior Research Scientist, Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Member of the Independent Group of Scientists (N=15) “Times of Crisis, Times of Change: Science for Accelerating Transformations to Sustainable Development”, the 2023 Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR), finds that at this critical juncture, midway to 2030, incremental and fragmented change is insufficient to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the remaining seven years. Implementation of the 2030 Agenda requires the active mobilization of political leadership and ambition for science-based transformations. This must be achieved globally – leaving no country, society or person behind. The report is an invitation to embrace transformations with the urgency needed to accelerate progress towards the SDGs. The GSDR 2023 highlights key transformations needed in different sectors and provides key findings from the literature, practical examples and tools for progress towards the SDGs. It provides a stylized model to help unpack and understand the transformation process over time and outline the roles of different levers in facilitating various stages of transformation through a systematic and structured approach. As history has shown, transformations are inevitable, and this report emphasizes that deliberate and desirable transformations are possible – and, indeed, necessary.
