Webinar on Times of Crisis, Times of Change: Science for Accelerating Transformations to Sustainable Development-held on 18th December ’23

“Times of Crisis, Times of Change: Science for Accelerating Transformations to Sustainable Development” The Global Sustainable Development Report 2023 Dr. Nancy Shackell, Senior Research Scientist, Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Member of the Independent Group of Scientists (N=15) “Times of Crisis, Times of Change: Science for Accelerating Transformations to Sustainable Development”, the 2023 Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR), finds that at this critical juncture, midway to 2030, incremental and fragmented change is insufficient to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the remaining seven years. Implementation of the 2030 Agenda requires the active mobilization of political leadership and ambition for science-based transformations. This must be achieved globally – leaving no country, society or person behind. The report is an invitation to embrace transformations with the urgency needed to accelerate progress towards the SDGs. The GSDR 2023 highlights key transformations needed in different sectors and provides key findings from the literature, practical examples and tools for progress towards the SDGs. It provides a stylized model to help unpack and understand the transformation process over time and outline the roles of different levers in facilitating various stages of transformation through a systematic and structured approach. As history has shown, transformations are inevitable, and this report emphasizes that deliberate and desirable transformations are possible – and, indeed, necessary. A Webinar on Identifying the Gender-Nutrition intersections in India

A webinar titled “Identifying the Gender-Nutrition intersections in India: Quantitative and Qualitative Evidence” was held under the CIRDAP webinar series of 2023. The presenter was Dr. Ruchira Bhattacharya, Assistant Professor & Head in-Charge, NIRD-PR Delhi Branch. The abstract of the presentation:Achieving zero hunger has been a key challenge for low-and middle income countries. India too has suffered from high rates of hunger and malnutrition with extremely high rates of wasting and stunting in children under 5, high rates of anemia in women and an increasing proportion of persons reporting obesity. The problem of malnutrition has also manifested itself as a gendered challenge. Due to multiple structural barriers that women face due to the cultural and societal practices liked to feminine roles, balanced nutrition becomes more difficult to access. These gender-nutrition intersections were examined in the presentation with secondary literature, and secondary data to observe the trends in nutritional intake for different genders, as well as the underlying causes of gendered-barriers to nutrition. The presentation also touched upon a few primary studies done by NIRD-PR which observed the complex gender-nutrition pathways for dietary diversity and service delivery on nutrition. To know more about the presentation, Please click the below link: GENDER & NUTRITION INTERSECTIONS IN INDIA: QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE EVIDENCE

A webinar to celebrate World Soil Day

Message from Dr. Cherdsak Virapat, Director General, Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) on The World Soil Day Monday 5 December 2022, 11:00 A.M. Dear Colleagues, Ladies and Gentlemen, Today, we celebrate the World Soil Day at the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP). The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Conference, in June 2013, unanimously endorsed World Soil Day and requested official adoption at the 68th UN General Assembly. In December 2013, the 68th UN General Assembly declared 5 December as the World Soil Day (WSD). It is held annually on 5 December as a means to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources1. The date of 5 December was chosen because it corresponds with the official birthday of the late H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, King of Thailand, who was one of the main proponents of this initiative2 . https://www.un.org/en/observances/world-soil-day  https://sdg.iisd.org/events/world-soil-day-2021/ This year’s theme of the World Soil Day 2022 and its campaign “Soils, where food begins” aims to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing the growing challenges in soil management, increasing soil awareness and encouraging societies to improve soil health. CIRDAP is proud to organize a webinar in collaboration with Bangladesh’s Department of Civil Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) for celebrating the World Soil Day entitled “The use of Vetiver Grass for Protection of Soil Erosion in Bangladesh”. The presentation will be given by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Shariful Islam. CIRDAP looks forward to promoting its emerging issues on integrated rural development programme including natural disaster risk reduction, climate change impacts, and soil & water resource management in the years to come.
