The thirty-third Meeting of the CIRDAP Technical Committee (TC-33) was held on 18th and 19th April 2018 at the Tanoa International Hotel, Nadi, Fiji Islands. The Technical Committee is CIRDAP’s policy body that provides professional inputs and assists in the implementation of the Centre’s programmes and projects in the member countries.
The meeting was attended by delegates from its 14 Member Countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam, and including Observers from the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF), the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Rajiv Ghandhi National Institute for Youth Development (RGNIYD) and the Rural Development Academy (RDA), Bangladesh
The Integrated Rural Development expert for CIRDAP, Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed; Dr Hyung Gun Kim from the Korean Legal Research Institute (KLRI), and Dr. Nur Ahmed Khondakar from FAO were also in attendance.
The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development, Disaster Management, and Meteorological Services, Fiji’s link Ministry to CIRDAP, hosted the meeting on behalf of the Government of Fiji. Hon. Joeli Cawaki, the Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Disaster Management, and Meteorological Services, inaugurated the Meeting as chief guest. Speaking at the inauguration of the meeting, Assistant Minister Cawaki emphasized on the change from the ‘business as usual’ way of doing things to an innovative approach to rural development. Delegates to the meeting were acknowledged with a traditional welcome ceremony which was conducted by the staff of the Office of the Divisional Commissioner Western, Fiji Island.
Later the Business Session, began with outgoing TC-32 Chairperson, Dr Mizanur Rahiman, Director General of the Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD), of the Government of the Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh.
Fiji Delegate Mr. Meleti Bainimarama, Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Rural and Maritime Development, National Disaster Management and Meteorological Services, Fiji Islands, was elected as the Chairperson of CIRDAP Technical Committee.
In acknowledging the leadership and services of the outgoing TC-32 Chairperson, the TC-33 Chairperson presented a miniature Fijian Tanoa, representing the Talanoa Dialogue concept.
The committee then discussed the meeting agenda on various programmatic issues. The meeting concluded with a field trip to Suva, Fiji.
